ginger-with-posys-picture-1Ginger cats are great. They even have their own Cat Appreciation Day on September 1st. Not only are they very popular among pet lovers but some of the most famous cats in the world are gingers. Think Orangey, the cat from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Puss in Boots from Shrek, Orlando the Marmalade cat in the books by Katherine Hale and the quintessential tiger cat, Garfield.

Famous though these might be, until recently I did not know that ginger cats could be female as well as male. Enlightened by Jan Edwards I did a little research and discovered why ginger queens are so rare. This is due to the fact that the “ginger gene” which produces the orange colour is on the X chromosome and females have two X chromosomes and so need two copies, while the toms only need one, which means that there are roughly three males to one…
